试验选择10头126日龄湘沙猪配套系后备母猪进行观测,结果显示湘沙猪配套系后备母猪生长较快,126～189日龄日增重为682.22 g;初情期体重为85.89 kg;初情期为182.65日龄;湘沙猪配套系后备母猪发情期表现为采食量减少、阴户红肿、阴户流出黏液、互相爬跨、用手压背呆立不动,这些均符合母猪发情的一般行为规律.
