•MoO2 microspheres were synthesized from MoO3 microrods via a facile solvothermal method.•H+ proves to be crucial for the synthesis of MoO2 microspheres with rough surface.•MoO2 microspheres perform well as ion-to-electron transducers in potentiometric sensors.
