•In cattle, udder score and maternal effect are related to higher milk production.•Heritability estimates ranged from 0.13 ± 0.012 to 0.23 ± 0.012.•Weaning weight, udder score and maternal effect showed positive genetic correlations.•The udder score trait indicates dams with higher maternal effect.•Genetic trends demonstrate positive genetic progress in the selection program.
