•Broken Hill-type deposits are among the largest and highest grade Pb, Zn, and Ag ores.•Broken Hill-type deposits are found only in the Diamantina Orogen of Australia.•Previously described BHT deposits in marbles and calc-silicates are not BHT deposits.•BHT sulfides occur in rocks metamorphosed from greenschist to granulite facies.
