•A new strong–weak form method (MCEDM) is developed for crack problems.•Crack analysis of the Functional Graded Materials is performed by MCEDM.•Novel element collocation strategy is proposed to generate system of equations.•Galerkin method with a small circular integration domain is utilized to form element stiffness coefficients.
