•Metal substitution on AlPO4-5 catalysts explored for ethanol esterification.•Metal incorporation affected morphology, pore merits, and active sites.•Concentration and strength of acid sites and mass transfer effects were tuned.•Si and Co substituted AlPO4-5 were the most active analogues for the esterification.•Optimized SAPO-5 exhibited comparable performance to commercial Zeolite β.
