Forest management effects on downed dead wood at stand and landscape scales in a temperate forest of the central United States

•Silvicultural treatments with greater harvest increased short-term downed dead wood.•Downed dead wood abundance decreased within twenty years after harvest.•Downed dead wood shifted from undecayed to decayed material within twenty years.•Forest management systems did not differ in downed dead wood at the landscape scale.
