•Sulfur species inactivate Cu ions and lead to inferior SCR activity below 400 °C;•Copper bisulfate and ammonium bisulfate can be inter-transformed;•NO+O2 convert ammonium bisulfate to copper bisulfate, which is difficult in recovery;•NH3 adsorption helps to decompose sulfate species and recover SCR activity easily.
