•Leading journals do not have consistent reporting practices for the assessment of the quality of reduction and fixation of intertrochanteric fractures.•Reporting on quality of reduction and fixation of intertrochanteric fractures has increased in volume over the past five years.•Standardized quantitative metrics of quality of reduction of intertrochanteric fractures are needed in order to assess clinical outcomes.
