•Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) did not accumulate Se in their bodies.•More than 35% of Se-rich silkworm pre-pupae (SWP) residuals have been reduced.•BSFL converted Se-rich SWP to a safe nutritionally valuable product with high ω-3 content.
