The mammographic breast density distribution of Finnish women with breast cancer and comparison of breast density reporting using the 4th and 5th editions of the Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System

•Most breast cancers occur in non-dense breasts in an eastern Finnish population.•The density distribution is strongly affected by the edition of BI-RADS used.•Breast density distributions from different studies cannot be universally generalized.
