Abstract
•Regions of speech-reading convergence differ between sighted and blind adults.•In the blind, speech-reading convergence occurs in the ventral occipitotemporal cortex.•Unlike in the sighted, perisylvian cortex is not engaged in Braille reading.•Ventral occipitotemporal cortex is activated by both Braille and visual reading.
