•Written rehearsal and audiovisual (AV) supported orthodontic informed consent were compared.•Written rehearsal was superior to the AV presentation immediately after consent.•Written rehearsal and the AV presentation were comparable at 6 months.•Informed consent knowledge significantly decreased from baseline to 6 months.
