Suspension feeding in fishes

Suspension feeding in fishes occurs across at least 5 orders of magnitude from 1 mm larval fishes to whale sharks that grow to 12 m (12,000 mm) in length. There are three morphological filter types that include: elongated gill rakers, flattened filters, and stratified filters. The modalities of filtration include, but are not limited to, sieve filtration, cross-flow filtration, vortical cross-step filtration, and ricochet filtration.
