•Intraventricular vortices support right and left ventricular (RV and LV) function.•Flow energy loss in pulmonary and systemic circulation has two peaks.•Systemic flow energy loss (EL) is controlled only by heart rate and RV stroke volume (SV).•Pulmonary flow EL is independent from LV hemodynamics.•RV-SV controls pulmonary and systemic energy dynamics as a blood volume reservoir.
