•Particle size distribution was changed, compared to that of the raw material, via biomass fractionation.•Klason lignin required a low compression ratio than holocellulose during pelletizing.•Raw material and extractive-free required a high compression ratio than Klason lignin during pelletizing.•Pelletizing was rather affected by the chemical composition than the biomass particle size.
