•Young adults with ADHD have an increased risk for co-morbid depression.•This systematic review specifies shared neurocognitive impairments of ADHD and MDD.•Impairments of executive functions and memory are candidate risk markers of MDD.•Shared neurocognitive risk mechanisms may mediate pathways from ADHD to MDD.•Low IQ may not confer risk for MDD among patients with ADHD.
