Cognitive User Selection Based on Throughput Estimation in Cognitive Radio Networks

In this paper, we propose an energy efficient user selection scheme by estimating the throughput and energy consumption of the system for each slot and selecting a secondary user (SU) pair (Tx-Rx) for sensing and transmission, which maximizes the system performance in terms of throughput and consumes the least energy. We also propose a new frame structure in which the sensing is done for variable amount of time by the selected SU only, until it meets the target probability of detection. We validate the performance of the proposed scheme through simulations and compare with existing schemes. The results show that the proposed scheme maximizes the network throughput as compared with the existing schemes.
