Historical, local and landscape factors determine the success of grassland restoration for arthropods

•Using 52 sites we investigated how grassland restoration affects arthropods.•Replicating target plant communities is more important than landscape factors.•There was evidence that historic factors causing extinction debts affect restoration.•High quality within-site management needs to be the focus of restoration program.
