•n-Alkanes extracted from modern leaf tissue have pre-modern radiocarbon ages.•Bulk leaf tissues have modern radiocarbon ages as expected.•We suspect strong fractionation against 14C during lipid biosynthesis.•Artificially ‘old’ n-alkanes may affect carbon cycling budgets and age models.
