•Smoothed inverse finite element method is developed for real-time shape sensing.•The iFEM(s) approach is applicable to wide range of materials and structural systems.•Performance of iFEM(s) is assessed by solving numerical and experimental test cases.•Superior sensing capabilities of iFEM(s) are demonstrated against conventional iFEM.
