•An effective and low-cost Re-doped Ni2Al3 coating was firstly fabricated by electroplating and pack cementation.•Re were all dispersed in the outer layer of Re-doped Ni2Al3 coating.•Re-doped Ni2Al3 coating was basically formed by inward diffusion of Al.
