Hollow structural topology optimization to improve manufacturability using three-dimensional moving morphable bars

•This paper proposes a topology method to obtain hollow structures directly.•3D solid bars are projected onto a fixed-grid to obtain element density function.•3D hollow bar can be obtained by Boolean subtraction of two solid bars.•Matlab code is provided to illustrate the method and facilitate further expansion.
