Experimental Study of Fiber Bragg Grating Applied on Quench Detection of HTS Tapes

The quench detection of high temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) was investigated. It is found that the multi-peak phenomenon of FBG at cryogenic temperature can be eliminated by using epoxy adhesive to fix the FBG. A quench experiment was performed on a 20 cm long HTS tape with voltage taps and FBG. The experimental results show that the FBG quench detection is much faster than the quench voltage signal, which has great significance for the quick quench detection and protection of HTS power devices.
