Combustion phase of a diesel/natural gas dual fuel engine under various pilot diesel injection timings

•Dual fuel engine performance and combustion process were investigated.•The diesel injection timing has an obvious effect on the whole combustion process.•Combustion phases of the pilot diesel and the NG were compared in detail.•The shorter NG combustion duration corresponds to the lower specific energy consumption.•The start of chemical reaction of the two fuels is consistent.
