•Forgiveness is an important component of our social toolkit in the face of transgressions.•We know relatively little about the social inputs that shape forgiveness decisions in early life.•We measure the effects of transgressor intent and remorse against a baseline of no information.•We find that intent matters more than remorse in promoting forgiveness behavior across development.
