EVIDENCE OF DIPOLE TRANSITIONS TO A 2-PHONON CIRCLE-TIMES PARTICLE MULTIPLET IN ND-143

A Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence study has been performed on the odd A nucleus Nd-143. W, detected a number of very strong dipole transitions in the energy region around 3 MeV. This is near the expected position of the two phonon 3(-) circle times 2(+)-multiplet in the even-even neighbouring nucleus Nd-142. Th,,ummed dipole decay width between 2.8 and 3.5 MeV in Nd-143 is comparable to the decay width of the (3(-) circle times 2(+))(1)-state at 3.425 MeV in the core nucleus Nd-142. First calculations in a harmonic approximation with quadrupole-quadrupole interaction indicate the two phonon circle times particle structure of the excitations.
