Expression of EGFR and conformational forms of EGFR in malignant pleural mesothelioma and its impact on survival

•Malignant mesothelioma (MM) consistently demonstrated high expression of EGFR.•There is a subset of MM tumors showing conformational EGFR forms consistent with EGFR dysregulation.•We did not find any cases with EGFR amplification or EGFR VIII mutation; in contrast 3.2% of the cases, all epithelioid, showed high EGFR polysomy.•The findings are consistent with the literature which has reported EGFR gene copy number increase and/or mutations to be relatively rare.•EGFR expression or FISH positivity did not correlate with survival as previously reported. The impact of EGFR conformation on survival would warrant further investigation.
