Time-critical testing and search problems

•Time-critical variant of the classical sequential testing problem and search problem.•Possibility to perform tests or searches in parallel to meet a deadline.•We establish that the problems are intractable.•Two compact mixed integer programming formulations and a local search heuristic.•Extensive computational experiments to assess the effectiveness of the approaches.
