•This study investigated all workers in a large aluminium factory in northern China, which is a larger sample study.•Occupational aluminium exposure can cause cognitive impairment of workers, mainly working memory.•Compared with middle-aged workers, young workers exposed to aluminium are more susceptible to memory impairment.
