Hybrid Modulation Approach for Next Generation Optical Access Networks.

The requirement for speed and low footprint of new paradigm of communications over optical networks is modeled with a monolithic integration of Direct Modulation Laser and Electro-absorption modulator (DML-EAM) as a simplified approach. Considering the low driving voltage and size of EAM, we performed an optimization model of hybrid direct-external modulation of optical intensity signal encoded with NRZ-OOK. The EAM is optimized using the complex field-amplitude transmission function with dependency on EAM lengths obtained from our foundry. Propagation through 40 km of standard SMF without DC with dynamic Extinction Ratio (ER) of about 28 dB was achieved with guaranteed QoS.
