Gray-level image denoising with an improved weighted sparse coding

•We propose an improved weighted sparse coding for gray-level image denoising.•Two weight matrices are introduced to characterize the statistics of noise in different similar patches and the priors of natural images.•The closed-form solution of the proposed method is obtained using the Maximum A-Posterior (MAP) estimation.
