•The addition of Y into CP-Ti successfully induced the Y segregation, resulting in both the grain refinement.•The presence of the Y precipitates over 1 um seemed to deteriorate the corrosion resistance of the Ti-Y alloys.•The comparative corrosion resistance of the Ti-0.1Y to CP-Ti resulted from the thickened oxide layer due to the micro-galvanic effect.
