On development of a ring type mechanical force transducer: Shape optimization, modification and characterization with different optimization codes

•Shape optimization of the proving ring results in lower stresses & higher sensitivity.•The performance of the new design is better than the conventional proving rings.•The optimized ring has a universal ring design with respect to varying ring sizes.•The double ring design has more even stress distribution than the single ring design.
