Identification of joint structural state and earthquake input based on a generalized Kalman filter with unknown input

•A novel method is proposed for real-time identification of states and earthquake.•The state and observation equations are derived from different coordinate systems.•Only sparse measurements of absolute accelerations are required for identification.•A hybrid dynamic is established for reducing the state dimension.
