Delayed mixing of iron-laden tributaries in large boreal rivers: Implications for iron transport, water quality and monitoring

•Mixing of Fe- and DOM-laden tributary delayed for 60–100 + km, and differed by year.•Conservative transport of dissolved Fe and associated trace elements for >100 km.•Mixing of tributary across river obscured detection of potential industrial inputs.•High-resolution spatial sampling needed to account for delayed mixing.
