•A new method for laser welding of steel-PMMA plates was explored.•Laser welding steel-PMMA joint strength is 974 N, much larger than ever reported.•Five types of steel-PMMA welded joints and fracture model have been proposed.•Taguchi method was applied to optimize welding parameters and improve joint quality.
