•Hydrothermal process plays an important role in activation of garlic carbon precursor.•Homogeneous distribution of sulfur particles facilitated Li-ion transfer.•Large specific surface areas and pore volume enables high sulfur storage.•Mesoporous carbon can give rise to the cycling stability by absorbing soluble LPS.•Loading of moderate sulfur content could avoid extra electrode polarization.
