•A simulation environment to assess several DSO remuneration strategies is proposed.•This methodology accounts for the uncertainties posed by distributed generation.•Distributed generation is modelled through an MILP minimising costs (CAPEX & OPEX).•The prosumer individual investment decision process and its uncertainty is modelled.•Several DSO remuneration strategies are modelled including peak and time-of-use fees.•A sensitivity analysis to several parameters of the proposed approach is presented.•It is key to check by simulation DSO remuneration strategies to avoid death spiral.
