•The polyphenol content of apricot peel is very high and the fruit is consumed with peel, this feature makes this fruit one of healthier for consumers.•The cultivar Goldrich, used as donor of PPV resistance in apricot is highly recommended for increasing polyphenol content and fruit quality.•The relevant amount of the different compounds of polyphenols in apricot is a valuable characteristic for increase apricot consumption.
