•Production parameters of specified bimodal composite metal foams are determined.•The hollow spheres’ theoretical filling rates can be varied with volume ratios.•Unimodal syntactic metal foams have a lower filling rate than bimodal metal foams.•The mechanical properties have a linear relationship to the density of the foams.
