Managing supply risk: Robust procurement strategy for capacity improvement

•We present a novel model for the design of procurement strategy under supply risk.•With uncertain parameters on the distribution of supplier’s capacity, we derive the optimal robust procurement strategy for a buyer.•We establish an upper bound for the impact that parameter uncertainty may have on the buyer’s profitability.•We obtain managerial insights on the buyer’s sensitivity to parameter uncertainty.•Our results are robust to several extensions.
