A rhombic shaped {GdIII2CoII2} heterometallic cluster exhibiting larger cryogenic magnetocaloric effect

Abstract A new 3d–4f heterometallic cluster with the formula, {[Gd2Co2(L)4(NO3)4(CH3O)2]·2CH3CN} (1) (HL = methyl3-methoxysalicylate), has been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveals that cluster 1 mainly consists of a rhombic shaped {GdIII2CoII2} core. The magnetic property study shows that ferromagnetic interaction was existed in cluster 1, and cluster 1 displays larger cryogenic magnetocaloric effect with magnetic entropy (−ΔSm) of 35.4 J K−1 kg−1 at T = 2.0 K and ΔH = 7.0 T.
