Fish species recognition using an improved AlexNet model

•The method proposed is more accurate and efficient compared to AlexNet.•Transfer learning was used to train a part of the network, resulting in faster convergence.•The item-based soft attention efficiently enhanced accuracy.•The average accuracy of the proposed method for fish image recognition was 97.43%.
