•We measured post-fire regenerating ponderosa pine growth and niche attributes.•Seedling diameter and terminal leader growth were higher in burned than unburned plots.•Seedling growth varied by overstory (−), soil PO4−3 (+), and coarse wood cover (+).•Cover of forbs (+), mountain muhly (+), and squirreltail (−) were associated with pine growth.
