Heuristics for the dynamic facility location problem with modular capacities

•We study a multi-period facility location problem with dynamic demand.•Facility capacities can vary over time by predetermined module sizes.•We develop an evolutionary heuristic based on the exploration of special-tailored neighborhoods.•We compare our methods to a state-of-the-art exact algorithm.•We propose new and more challenging instances for different scenarios.
