A commercially available NIR fluorescence probe for the detection of hypochlorite and its application in cell imaging

•A commercial available fluorescent dye for the NIR identification of hypochlorite was constructed.•The probe showed fast (< 30 s), specific and sensitive (56 nM) fluorescent response to hypochlorite.•The probe was used in exogenous hypochlorite detection and imaging in living cells.
