•We report milking machine settings and milking practices in Brazilian dairy herds.•A state-of-the-art vacuum recorder was used to perform dynamic milking tests.•Teat morphology was different among herd size categories.•Pulsation and vacuum settings were different among herd size categories.•Milking practices were more deficient is small herds than in large herds.
