•The remains of at least one sturgeon from a wooden barrel of the late medieval Danish shipwreck Gribshunden.•Morphological species identification to Acipenser oxyrinchus was validated through ancient DNA analysis.•The occurrence of sturgeon, a luxury item with high value, would be used to signal of economic power.
