Facile green and one-pot synthesis of seville orange derived carbon dots as a fluorescent sensor for Fe3+ ions

•Fluorescent carbon dots were fabricated by hydrothermal treatment methods using Seville orange.•The novel carbon dots showed highly selective and sensitive Fe3+ ion detection.•The usability of carbon dots in practical applications was tested in tap and ground water samples.
